IKEA Makeover with Solid Oak Fluted Panels: BESTÅ, PAX and METOD
IKEA furniture is practical and well built, but flat white or foil fronts can look plain. Solid oak fluted panels change that without replacing the cabinet: the carcass stays, the fronts get a real wood surface with depth and texture. Why solid oak instead of foil or MDF strips
- Real wood you can feel. Every panel is solid European oak, so grain and colour vary naturally from piece to piece.
- Self-adhesive backing. The panels come with a 3M adhesive backing, so there is no need for glue, nails or clamps on a smooth, clean and dry front.
- Cut to your size. You enter the height and width of each front, and the panels arrive at your height with the width edges trimmed as you choose.
Which IKEA furniture works best
BESTÅ TV benches and storage units are the most popular project. The doors are flat and a manageable size, so one order usually covers the whole unit. PAX wardrobe doors are tall, so height matters: FlutLine panels can be ordered up to 2,800 mm long. METOD kitchen fronts and island side panels also work well, as long as the surface is smooth and not exposed to standing water.
Step 1: Measure every front
Always measure your own doors instead of relying on catalogue sizes, because models and generations differ. Measure the height first, then the width, in millimetres. If you want the panel to stay slightly inside the door edge, subtract that margin before you enter the size. Our measuring and cutting guide shows exactly how the width is covered.
Step 2: Choose profile, tone and edges
Each panel is 104 mm wide. Choose Picco for fine, expressive lines, Arco for soft rounded flutes or Quadro for clean, square edges. Each profile comes in Natural or Smoked oak. For a front that is not an exact multiple of 104 mm, choose symmetrical trimming so both outer panels are equally narrow, or trim one side only.
Step 3: Handles, hinges and gaps
- Remove handles and knobs before you apply the panels. Mark the hole positions, then drill through the panel and refit the handle with longer screws. Push-to-open fittings avoid drilling completely.
- The panels add thickness to the front. Open and close each door once the first panel is in place to check the gap to neighbouring doors and the worktop.
- Keep the adhesive surface free of dust and grease, and press each panel firmly along its full length.
What does it cost?
The price depends on the total panel area in your basket: the more area, the lower the price per m², across all profiles and tones together. The calculator shows the exact price for each front before you order, including VAT. Panel orders under €100 include a €25 handling fee for cutting and packing; above €100 there is none.

Oak looks different in every room. A sample (170 × 104 mm) lets you hold the profile against your furniture in your own light before you decide. Sample kits combine three profiles in one tone, or all six options together.
